See the stunning before and after transformation of our beach house makeover featuring lighter paint colors, coastal decor, white countertops, neutral curtains, and cozy beach cottage style.

If you’ve been following along for awhile, then you probably already heard that we bought a beach house — and over the last few months, I’ve had so much fun transforming it into a cozy coastal space that truly reflects our style.
When we first walked into our house, I immediately saw the potential, but it definitely needed some love. The home was filled with heavy colors, outdated finishes, and a very bold 90’s beach style that felt dark and overwhelming instead of relaxing and coastal.
With a little vision, fresh paint, and lots of lightening up, we completely transformed the space into a cozy coastal home.
The Living Room: From Bright & Busy to Calm & Coastal
The biggest transformation was definitely the living room.
Before, the space was filled with bright colored couches straight out of the 90’s along with loud, colorful wall art to match. The room felt busy and dated, and it lacked that peaceful beach house feeling we were hoping for.
For the makeover, we completely changed the mood of the space by bringing in softer coastal tones and lighter furniture. Our light blue couch instantly brightened the room and gave it that airy beach cottage feel.
We swapped out the bold artwork for softer coastal decor, layered in neutral textures, and added cozy details like striped and floral pillows to make the room feel welcoming and relaxed.
The difference is honestly unbelievable. What once felt dark and outdated now feels calm, cozy, and full of natural coastal charm.

Brightening Up the Kitchen
The kitchen was another space that needed a major refresh.
Originally, the kitchen had butcher block countertops that gave the room a darker, heavier feel. While butcher block can be beautiful, these countertops made the space feel more rustic than coastal.
We decided to replace them with white countertops, and it completely transformed the entire kitchen. The lighter surfaces instantly reflected more natural light and made the space feel fresh, clean, and open.
Sometimes the simplest changes make the biggest impact, and this was definitely one of them.

Fresh Paint Changed Everything
One of the best decisions we made during the makeover was painting throughout the entire house. We used Sherwin Williams “snowbound” on the walls and on the trim we used Sherwin Williams “natural linen”.
The fresh paint brightened every room and created a clean backdrop for all of the coastal decor we wanted to incorporate. It helped everything feel more cohesive, airy, and peaceful.
It’s amazing what paint can do for a home. Suddenly the entire house felt bigger, brighter, and more inviting.

Neutral Window Treatments for a Soft Coastal Look
Another simple update that made a huge difference was replacing the window treatments.
We added neutral curtains throughout the house to soften the rooms and create a light, breezy feeling. The softer tones helped balance all of the blue accents and natural textures while still letting in plenty of sunlight. We also added roman shades in some rooms to give the house even more of that relaxed beachy feel.
Those little details really helped bring the cozy coastal vision to life.

Creating a Cozy Coastal Feel
Our overall goal with this makeover was simple: lighten everything up and create a home that felt relaxed, warm, and welcoming.
By using softer colors, natural textures, neutral fabrics, and coastal-inspired details, the house now feels like the perfect beach retreat. Every room feels brighter, calmer, and so much more like us.
The before and after photos truly tell the story best. What was once a bold and dated beach house is now a cozy coastal escape filled with charm, warmth, and personality.

Final Thoughts
We really didn’t do a major renovation with the beach house — we simply decided to lighten things up and simplify the space.
This makeover reminded me just how powerful paint, texture, and thoughtful decor can be. We took a home that felt stuck in the 90’s and transformed it into a cozy coastal retreat without months and months of renovations.
And honestly, seeing the before and after photos side by side makes all the hard work completely worth it.
