How to Make a Moss Covered Birdhouse For Your Planter

Step 1: Stain the birdhouse

I began with a few unfinished craft store birdhouses. The raw wood is beautiful, but I wanted them to have a warmer, slightly aged look.

Using a wood stain, I lightly coated each birdhouse and let them dry completely. This step instantly gives the wood a more vintage-inspired feel. I also love the way the moss stands out with the darker wood tone.

Tip:  A slightly uneven finish adds to the charm so don’t worry about perfection.

Step 2: Add Moss for Soft Cottage Texture

I let the stain fully dry then I glued sheet moss to the front and back of each birdhouse.

I trimmed the moss to fit and attached it using hot glue, pressing gently so it adhered securely. The moss adds that soft, natural texture that makes the whole piece feel like it came straight from a storybook garden.

Step 3: Add a Wooden Wheel Detail and Dowel

Next, I hot glued a small wooden wheel to the bottom of the birdhouse. This tiny detail adds personality and gives the birdhouse a more custom, finished look as well as helps when I go to insert the dowel.

To make the birdhouse easy to display, I inserted a wooden dowel into the bottom of wheel and secured it with hot glue. This creates a sturdy stake so it can be placed directly into a planter or garden bed.

Adding the dowel transforms the birdhouse from simple decor into a beautiful focal point for spring containers.

Step 4: Finish with Ivy

To complete the look, I tucked an ivy plant into the planter around the base.

The trailing greenery softens the entire display and gives it that layered, collected cottage feel. The combination of stained wood, moss, and ivy makes the birdhouse feel naturally at home outdoors.
